Obituary for Jack E. Scherer

Jack E. Scherer died surrounded by loving family on January 28, 2016. He was born on November 19, 1924, the youngest son and thirteenth child of the late Christian and Emma (Emerich) Scherer of Syracuse. He was raised by his elder sister, Elsa (Scherer) Daugherty after his mother passed not long after he was born. He graduated from Syracuse City Schools. He enlisted in the US Navy, and served in the Pacific Theater in World War II on the battleship USS Indiana and on the aircraft carrier USS Bon Homme Richard. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the First Presbyterian Church, both in Marcellus. Mr. Scherer retired from Carrier Corporation in 1986 after serving as a Senior Buyer there for most of his career.

Mr. Scherer's priority and love was his family. He enjoyed socializing with his family and close friends at his camp on Cross Lake. He was outgoing and made friends easily, and was an avid hunter and fisherman, but he enjoyed most the camaraderie of his friends in the outdoors.

Mr. Scherer was an Assistant Scoutmaster in Boy Scout Troop 66 in Marcellus. He also supported two of his sons learning to play the bagpipes and became an aficionado of bagpipe music, traveling to Europe and Canada to see the Scottish World Games.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, the love of his life, Margaret (Doig) Scherer, three sons and their wives, six grandchildren and two great grandchildren. They are Jack and his wife Holly, and their children Jack and Helen; David and his wife Joanne, and their daughters Heather and Amanda, and their grandchildren Jason and Giuliana; and Alexander (also known as Sandy) and his wife Erin and their two sons James and Colin.
Calling hours will be from 5:00 PM to 7:30PM on Monday, February 1st, and a Memorial will be held at 10:00AM on Tuesday, February 2 at Plis Funeral Home, 33 North St., Marcellus.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be offered to Marcellus Ambulance Volunteer Emergency Services.
