Obituary for Robert P. O'Brien

Robert P. O'Brien, 66, of Marcellus, NY, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday May 25, 2014, under the loving care of his family and Hospice. Born and raised in Syracuse, Robert was a 1967 graduate of West Genesee High School and attended Jefferson Community College. An avid sports participator, he played basketball, baseball and football throughout school.
Bob's adult passion was golf; he worked on the Senior Pro Golf Tour as a caddy for several years, and caddied the 1992 PGA Senior Tour winner to victory. He retired from the Tour to own and operate Nightingale Quarry, where he could spend his days "playing" in his own sandbox.
Robert's favorite holiday was Christmas; he loved to have his family all together under one roof, and Christmas was the time of year when everyone could gather around a great meal and enjoy one another's company.
He was a strong family man, always putting his loved ones first; enjoying watching his kids, and later his grandkids, participate in athletic and artistic activities through the years. He opened his home to any in need – always having an "open door" policy to any friends or family who needed a meal to eat or a place to stay.
Along with his family, he will be missed by many friends from the golf community. He was an avid player in the local Syracuse area, and often travelled to Florida to play with some of his best friends from his caddying days and his childhood. His overall love for life leaves his family with decades of wonderful memories.
Surviving are his loving wife of 40 years, Deborah (Nightingale) O'Brien of Marcellus; his three children, Shay O'Brien of Sylvan Beach, Seth O'Brien of Marcellus, and Alyse (Michael) Bradley of Marcellus; his mother, Mary O'Brien of Fairmount; three grandchildren and several cousins, aunts, uncles. Robert was predeceased by his father, Robert O'Brien
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday May 30 at Amber Congregational Church, 2394 Otisco Valley Rd., Marietta. Calling hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday May 29 at Plis Funeral Home, 33 North St., Marcellus.
