Obituary for Willis J. Homick

Willis John Homick, 83, of Auburn, died peacefully Thursday evening, October 6, 2016 at The Commons, while holding the hand of his wife of 60 years, Irene.
Born August 19, 1933, in Scranton, PA, Willis was the oldest of four children of the late John and Mary Nasevich Homick. He was the valedictorian of the Auburn Central High School Class of 1952, where he played football and basketball and was a member of the “Dukes”. He earned an associate’s degree from Auburn Community College and took business classes at Syracuse University. He was an Air Force veteran stationed in his beloved Hawaii. As the eldest son, he was called home from the service to run the family business Homick’s Apparel, after his father took ill. He served as president of the store for more than 30 years, and along with his three siblings created one of Central New York’s most successful and respected businesses. One of the greatest accomplishments of his career was serving as president of the national Menswear Retailer’s Association, which allowed him to make important contributions to the apparel industry, and travel the country making many lasting friendships.
In addition to his tireless efforts at the store, he was strongly committed to his Catholic faith, and played an integral role in his parish, SS Peter & Paul Church. He was ordained a deacon of the Catholic Church in October, 1991, and dedicated countless hours to serving the needs of his parishioners. He also served as director of the Diaconate Formation Program for the Diocese of Stamford for several years, which allowed him to continue his mission of furthering the Catholic faith.
Willis’ greatest contribution in his lifetime was that of the love and joy he brought to his family and friends. A dedicated family man, he provided for his wife and four children with a generous and loving heart, and always stood by them with unwavering support. He was a friend to all, and touched many lives through his kind words and gentle guidance. He will be missed in so many ways.
He is survived by his wife Irene Goliash Homick, his daughters Carol Homick of Raleigh, NC, and Barbi (Dan) Clifton of Victor, NY, his sons Fr. Joseph Homick of San Francisco, CA, and David Homick of Auburn, six grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Michael (Lianne Liberatore) Homick and sister Helen (John) Noz. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother Francis “Fritz” Homick.
Funeral liturgy will be offered at 10 A.M. Saturday, October 15, in SS Peter & Paul Church. The family will receive friends at 9 a.m. at the church.
Contributions may be made in his memory to SS Peter & Paul Church or the American Heart Association.
