Obituary for Mary B. Bliss (Bradley)

Mary B. Bliss (Bradley)
The Family is hosting a Celebration of Life for their late Mother Mary "Mimi" Bradley Bliss on Saturday July 22, 2017 at Baltimore Woods Nature Center, 4007 Bishop Hill Rd. Marcellus, NY. at 11:30 a.m.. A reception with refreshments will follow the service.

Mimi died in her home with loved ones and family on May 5, 2017.
Mary was born to Marie Consalvi and Daniel Bradley in East Orange, New Jersey. She lived there until 1933 when the family moved to Greenwich, Connecticut. At some point, early in her life she was referred to as “Mimi”. She maintained this sobriquet throughout her life
Mimi attended the Greenwich Academy and following graduation matriculated at Wells College in Aurora, NY where she majored in Philosophy. Mimi made life-long friends at Wells. At that time, she attracted the attention of a handsome former Army Air Corps Sargent and native Syracusan, Charles Everett Stone “Chuck” Bliss. Chuck was finishing a Business Degree at Syracuse University through the GI Bill. Mimi and Chuck were married at her mother’s apartment in New York City.
Chuck and Mimi spent the first years of their marriage living in New York City. In 1952 they moved to Marcellus, NY, where they started their family. Chuck worked in the family business; Bliss Steel Products Incorporated. Mimi and Chuck raised five children, each of whom she raised with a fierce love. She celebrated their individual achievements with immeasurable pride.
Mimi was a renaissance woman and developed talents in the arts and athletics from youth. As a young pianist, she taught herself to play the Moonlight Sonata at 14. An accomplished artist, she worked in oils, water colors and pencil. She loved to sail, played bridge and was an excellent golfer. Her favorite sport however, was tennis playing into her eighties. She shared her love for the game by volunteer teaching. She provided free lessons at Marcellus Park through the Community Council and later coached the Marcellus High School Girls team.
After her youngest children were in school, she began substitute teaching in the local districts, often in Marcellus, supporting all subjects and grade levels. She obtained her Master’s Degree in English at Oswego State.
Mimi joined the fellowship of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) in July of 1978. Her journey began slowly and tentatively, but with the help, support and love of others found her place in the recovering community in Syracuse. She worked for several years as the General Secretary for AA Intergroup at the University Building in Syracuse. In over thirty=eight years of sobriety though AA, she was a magnificent example of AA’s primary purpose; carrying the message of hope to other recovering alcoholics. She helped many people and frequently sponsored women new to sobriety. Mimi became a Credentialed Alcoholism and Addictions Councilor (CAC) through New York State and worked in the field later in life.
Perhaps Mimi’s greatest gift was her fervent interest in people from all walks of life. She rejoiced in individuality and left most people she encountered with a more positive perspective, through her intense interest in them and their wellbeing.
Mimi was predeceased by many cherished friends and family members. Among them, her son Peter, who died tragically in 2012, her dear sister Jean, and her friends of over forty years, the late Dr. Richard Phillips, his wife Dorrie and their children.
Mimi leaves to celebrate her life and spirit her four surviving children; Chuck Jr., Bradley, Daniel, Louise, daughter in law Gail Sims Bliss and grandchildren Simon and Emma Bliss.
She touched many lives, leaving them richer for her presence.
