Obituary for Myron Kushnir

Myron Kushnir, passed away Thursday evening, November 13, 2014, at his residence, surrounded by his family.
Myron was born in the Ukraine, and at age 18 he immigrated to the United States in September 1947, with the assistance of the Catholic Youth Organization. He was welcomed at Ellis Island, and places with a host family in Auburn, NY. He has resided here ever since. Unbeknownst to him the same ship that brought him to the U.S. Carried another immigrant, Helen Wilzinski, who would become his wife of 62 years. Myron enlisted in the US Army during the Korean Conflict, serving a four year tour as a Military Police Officer, mostly in Europe due to his ability to speak several Slavic languages. He often commented how proud he was to be able to serve in the military and represent the United States. Following the service which also saw him cross the Atlantic by ship five times, he returned to Auburn, married Helen, and began his American dream. He was a skilled boiler room operator, and worked for Chrysler New Process Gear in Syracuse until his retirement in 1993.
Myron was a member of Ss Peter & Paul Church, United Autoworkers, the Ukrainian National Club, Sicz Club, and a 62 year member of S-K Post American Legion #1324.
Myron is survived by his wife Helen, his three children Linda (Brian) Hester of Auburn, Karen Howell of Englewood, FL, and John (Nadine) Kushnir of Edmond, OK and two grandchildren Ashley Hester of Auburn and Olivia Kushnir of Edmond
Funeral services for Mr. Kushnir will be at 9 A.M. Monday, from the Plis Funeral Home, and 9:30 A.M. in SS Peter & Paul Church. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery.
Friends are invited to call Sunday, from 5 to 7 P.M. at the funeral home, 220 State St., Auburn.
